Our first story is about Art who is a participant and now a volunteer instructor at the Stonestown YMCA technology lab. Art has been coming to Stonestown YMCA for over 3 years. When he noticed that trainers were unable to train in the lab, he took it upon himself to fill the void and train his fellow participants. He has helped a great number of seniors ranging from accessing the DMV website to helping fill-out online forms. He’s committed to volunteering his time 2 to 3 times a week for 3 hours a day. SF Connected is grateful for the effort and initiative Art has demonstrated in helping his colleagues navigate the digital world.
Our second story is about the ingenuity of our group of volunteers particularly the one that is training through Self-Help for the Elderly. Their instructor who teaches in Vietnamese created an insert that will help typing in Vietnamese using a standard american keyboard. Vietnamese alphabet is derived from Latin with additional diacritics for tones, and certain letters. There needs to be more than 26 letter options to type in Vietnamese. The insert the instructor made will help seniors when typing in Vietnamese and alleviate the need to memorize which key to press.
